All day Charles Darwin, the scientist who formulated the theory of evolution, received a letter on this day in 1858: it was from Alfred Russell Wallace, a naturalist with a similar idea - which prompted Darwin to publish the most ground-breaking scientific theories ever put forward. Read his major work where he describes it: On The Origin Of Species, published in 1859, is available in full on Project Gutenberg.
